Many people choose to interpret the Bible in different ways. Each denomination is a different interpretation of what is thought to be the proper way to worship God. Historically, the United States' religious tradition is mostly Protestant Christianity. Today over three quarter of Americans identify as Christian with a slight majority identifying as Protestant (56%). Catholics (27%) are the largest Christian denomination as Protestants belong to a variety of denominations. Interpretation of the Bible has created and divided Christian denominations.
The Bible reflects different practices at different times in history. With such little text to go on, interpreting what Jesus and others actually meant, or how it should be carried out, who should carry it out and which points in the Bible are more important that others has taken generations of readers of the Bible and interpretation of the Bible has created different groups with different practices of the faith.
