You will choose a research paper topic from the list provided.
Your thesis statement, outline and sources may change as you dive deeper into your research. This is expected and allowed.
In addition to choosing/creating your topic, you should plan the use and citation of at least four sources in your papers. Your Skidmore and Smith textbook should be utilized as one of your sources.
Slavery in Brazil and/or Cuba: Explore the slave trade through abolition in either Brazil or Cuba examining its impact on the culture and society. You could also compare and contrast slavery in these nations instead of focusing on one nation.
i. Examine how an export impacts culture and society: Examples include Coffee in Colombia; Sugar in Cuba and/or Brazil; Peru's Guano Age; illegal drug trade in the Andean region; oil in Venezuela and/or Ecuador; Bananas in Central America. Refer to your textbook for more examples.
ii. Dirty Wars: The countries of Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, and El Salvador have experienced a period of military dictatorship and/or guerrilla warfare in the late 20th century. Examine the causes and consequences of societies living under these conditions.
iii. Examine the life of a famous or infamous Latin American: Research how he or she affected culture and society in depth. You can choose from Eva Peron, Juan Peron, Fidel Castro, Porfirio Diaz, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Carmen Miranda, Pele, Hugo Chavez, Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, Simon Bolivar, Rigoberta Menchu, Dilma Rouseff, Jose Vasconcelos, Manuel Noriega, Violeta Chamorro, Che Guevara, Dolores Cuacango, Ingrid Betancourt, Evo Morales, Cristina Kirchner, Diego Maradona, and Roberto Duran among others.
