Evaluating the understanding of the material

After hearing the statement "No Cell Phones Allowed" in several of your classes over the last couple semesters, you begin to wonder if they have an impact on a student's performance in a class or if your teachers are just out of touch with today's world and are technophobes. You are given permission to conduct a study by observing a large lecture class of 120 students. You record the students' behavior for a month and document the amount of time each student is using their cell phone during class. At the end of the month, the students are given an exam on the material covered in that time period to evaluate their understanding of the material.

1. What is the question investigated in this experiment?

2. What would be the hypothesis tested?

3. What is the independent variable in this experiment?

4. What is the dependent variable in this experiment?

5. Explain what results would support your hypothesis.

6. Describe how you could create a control group for this experiment.

7. Other than a control, describe 2 ways you could improve the accuracy of the data obtained from this experiment and explain how they would improve the quality of your experiment.
