Overview:
Despite the aesthetic changes that mark the beginning of the Middle Ages, the purpose of the art remains the same: a vehicle to worship. Compare and contrast the art that was used in temples during the Roman Empire and churches in the Jewish, Christian, and Byzantine eras.
Instructions:
In your reflective paper, you will include examples of artwork from your textbook and use them to support your ideas. Your paper should include the following topics in this order:
• Paragraph 1: Introduction
• Paragraph 2: Roman Art
o Discuss the art from the Roman Empire that represents their gods and goddesses. Evaluate why they developed a style of realism. Describe the art formally by considering materials, balance, movement, etc.
• Paragraph 3: Jewish, Christian, Byzantine Art
o Discuss the art from the early Middle Ages that represent their religion.
Evaluate why they developed a style of symbolism. Describe the art formally by considering materials, composition, color, etc.
• Paragraph 4: Compare/Contrast
o Compare and contrast the art that was used in temples during the Roman Empire and churches in the Jewish, Christian, and Byzantine eras.
• Paragraph 5: Conclusion
Remember: the art from Unit 5 does not reflect a lack of artistic ability. It represents a new attitude towards art as a whole. Refrain from discussing whether or not you like the artwork: rather, consider the changes on a formal level.
As a reflective paper, you are not required to write in the third person. Rather, use this opportunity to share your reactions to the artistic progression through the ages. All other APA formats are required, including a cover page and reference page.
