Evaluation is making a judgment about something or someone - a product, a service, a program, performance, book, etc. You can make a positive evaluation or a negative one, or a comparative option where you think the advantages of a product outweighs its disadvantages.
Your objective is to write an Evaluation Argument. Consult Practical Argument for further guidelines on the components of an Evaluation Argument.
Choose ONE from the following:
1. Evaluate computer operating systems. Is Windows a superior platform over Mac?
2. Evaluate hybrid cars. Are they worth the extra cost?
3. Evaluate a musical artist whom you think has had a great impact on today's generation?
4. Evaluate a classic novel-such as Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter-- and make a judgment on whether you think it should continue to be taught at High school.
5. Evaluate the benefits of a vegetarian diet and argue if people should become vegetarian.
6. Evaluate theEl Camino website on its featuresto attract future students.
7. Evaluate a textbook of a class you have taken and judge whether it has contributed to the education of the subject.
If none of these topics interest you, let me know of a subject that does you and present your thesis for approval.

Establish a set of criteria (3 to 4) as the basis on which you will make your evaluation. This will depend on the topic you wish to evaluate. Possible criteria for evaluating a musical artist may be the popularity of the artist, his or her contribution to the music industry, his or her influence on other artists, the revenue the artist can generate etc.These should then support your thesis on your evaluation of the artist.
Structure for the essay:
I. Introduction: Establish the criteria by which you will evaluate your subject. State the thesis. Your stand must be clear.
Ex. Beyonce is the most influential musical artist of today's generation.
II. Body Paragraphs: Establish topic sentence of body paragraphs based on the criteria you have established. Provide evidence for your body paragraphs-supply facts and opinions that help satisfy the criteria.
III. Refutation of Opposing arguments -Present opposing arguments to your thesis and rebut those arguments.
IV. Conclusion: Reinforce your thesis and end with a strong concluding statement.
Other Guidelines:
1. You need at least one outside source to support your argument. Use MLA formatting and in-text citation. Establish a Works Cited Page. See guidelines for MLA requirements in Hacker and Sommer's Rules for Writers Page Pages 391-475.
2. Integrate quotations and paraphrases using signal phrases.
3. Use reasoning -deductive and inductive -for your analyses.
4. Pay attention to grammar conventions.

6. Desired length: 2 to 3 pages double spaced.
7. Invest in planning your essay before you begin writing it.
