CRITICAL THINKING IN ANTHROPOLOGY
1. Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism is a continuum or a spectrum that is fluid and changing. Choose a particular subject (marriage, religion, education, environmental, making a living, gender) and describe how you think your own level of ethnocentrism has changed as a result of this course. Answer the following:
a. What is the issue or subject that has had a meaningful change of thinking.
b. What were some of the assumptions or presuppositions that you “took for granted” regarding this issue.
c. What are the data, facts, observations or experiences that you have encountered that has influenced how your thinking changed with regard to this issue.
2. According to Bodley in the Victims of Progress book: (Ch. 9 The Price of Progress), there is a discussion on Goldschmidt’s formula for evaluating the success of a culture.
a. What are Goldshmidt’s criteria
b. How would you assess your own society using Goldschmidt’s criteria. Support your answer with concrete examples.
