Establish the direct link between patient safety and issues

Research Problems

The issues of workforce have been neglected in considering factors that impact on patient safety. This problem has resulted in a dismal performance noted in organizations involved with commencing health care initiatives for patient safety. The cause of the problem is poor comprehension regarding the link that exists between patient safety and the workforce issues. It is important to note that retaining health care professionals who are skilled and talented after recruitment is a serious challenge to most health care organizations.

Therefore, a high employee turnover in these organizations compromises the quality of services offered to patients, results in fiscal problems in the organization, lost of productivity, time wasting for replacing staff, and patient safety is not guaranteed (Gelinas & David, 2004). It is important to identify all the workforce issues because they have the propensity of causing problems in ensuring patient safety.

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to establish the direct link between patient safety and issues of hospital workforce.

This is important is sensitizing health organizations to focus and divert their efforts towards addressing the problems of the workforce.

Focusing on finding solutions to workforce issues will ensure a low turnover rate of health employees, finance will be saved because the cost of replacement, recruitment, and retention will decrease, employees will have enough orientation and competency development, and health organizations will have not only consistent competency in providing quality services but also an effective workforce to ensure patient safety (Gelinas & David, 2004).

Objectives
•To find out workforce issues experienced in the health care organizations.
•To establish the link between workforce issues and patient safety.
•To recommend solutions aimed at mitigating patient safety problems due to workforce issues.

Hypothesis
•H1 The main workforce issue is employee turnover.
•H2 There is no link between patient safety and workforce issues.

Credibility and Validity

This research is credible because it addresses a current issue that is determining the performance of the health care system. It is well positioned to address the problem by encouraging health organizations to develop competent workers for the next generation, allocate resources and focus on having effective leadership in the workforce, benchmarking human resource, ensuring the work design is optimal, and cultivating a culture that will guarantee patient safety. The research is valid because evidence shows that hospitals that emphasise on workforce issues have better patient safety outcome (Durr, 2003). Therefore, resolving workshop issues result in quality health care services, high performance, and patient safety.
