In a community education setting, I would use Erikson's theory of psychosocial development to explain how peer pressure and bullying affect children differently depending on their developmental stage. For children in Erikson's industry versus inferiority stage (approximately ages 6-12), I would emphasize the importance of building competence, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Community education should focus on helping children recognize bullying, practice positive social skills, and learn safe ways to seek help and support others. Families, schools, and community programs can reinforce these skills by promoting cooperative activities, inclusive environments, and consistent adult guidance, which help protect children's self-esteem and emotional well-being (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2022; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Teaching adults how to model respectful behavior and respond quickly to bullying is also essential in preventing long-term negative outcomes (HHS, n.d.).

This approach would shift somewhat when addressing adolescents in Erikson's identity versus role confusion stage (approximately ages 12-18), as peer influence and identity formation are more common. Community education for this age group should highlight open communication, empathy, and respect for individual differences, while also addressing peer pressure, social media influences, and emotional regulation. Parents and educators should be encouraged to watch for behavioral changes, provide emotional support, and intervene consistently when bullying occurs, while empowering adolescents to make independent, healthy choices and support their peers (Morin, 2019; CDC, 2021). While the core message of safety, respect, and inclusion remains the same, tailoring education to the audience, children, parents, educators, or community members, creates strategies that are developmentally appropriate and effective in promoting positive outcomes for individuals, families, and communities (HHS, n.d.).
