As the professor I would evaluate a research paper based on the approach used, the amount of sources provided as well as explaining the creditability of those sources, the grammar used, citation, as well as the hypothesis and thesis provided. I would approach the grading by giving each section or element, such as citations or grammar, a five point scale and grading them accordingly. I believe that naming elements such as the approach used , including correct sources and including a hypothesis and thesis would grade higher than things like grammar.
The role of basic English writing skills versus demonstrating content knowledge about the topic is that you must make sure that the fundamentals of English writing are followed when it comes to all written papers such as the organization of the paper. The text should be free of significant grammatical errors before starting to compose it and the text must be clear to read. Having someone re-read your paper is always a good idea since they might find errors that you might have overlooked. My criteria for judging a research paper would include the creditable sources provided, the correct use of citation, whether or not the objective of the research paper was accomplished, grammar used as well has the way in which the scholar present his or her hypothesis, thesis and conclusion.
