Emphasising the significance of teaching alongside research

Problem:

Boyer (1990) called for a change in perspective in scholarship, emphasising the significance of teaching alongside research. In "Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate", he called for a balance between research and teaching in measuring faculty achievement (Billing & Halstead, 2024). Boyer identified four kinds of scholarship: discovery, integration, application, and teaching, enlarging the traditional concentration on study alone, and he argued for a broader concept of scholarship that included the creation of links between theory and practice, thereby legitimising the complete range of academic labour (Billings & Halstead, 2025). Boyer argued that these four overlapping functions constitute the role of faculty. My interests are in engagement in simulation, clinical training and role-play in nursing education, and these are vital for developing critical thinking, clinical reasoning abilities and communication among students. Simulation provides a safe environment for practice with immediate feedback, which aids in skill mastery. Clinical training helps to make the actual application of nursing concepts more concrete and increases competence and confidence in decision-making (Billings & Halstead, 2024). Role-play develops emotional intelligence and communication abilities as it helps students be able to see things from other perspectives (Maghsoodi et al., 2025). Boyer's model categorises scholarly activity into four dimensions. Need Assignment Help?
