Empathetic questioning utilizing open ended questions and summarizing is a skill that all good counselors should have in order to make their clients feel comfortable, listened to, and understood in the therapeutic environment (Egan & Reese, 2019). Open ended questions help to convey empathy because they show a genuine interest in hearing more about the client's experience rather than deferring to just yes and no answers. Summarizing involves reflecting key points from the conversation back to the client, asking if the information the counselor heard is correct, and asking a question such as, "These are all things I heard, which of these areas should we focus on right now". These types of questions help clients to feel that what they are conveying truly matters to the counselor, strengthening the partnership in the professional relationship (Egan & Reese, 2019). After completing the exercise this morning with my fiancé, I found that specifically asking open-ended questions was the tactic that kept the conversation moving along and brought more answers.
