Electrical safety is a major concern among the persons

Lab Activity  (Case Study 1): Electrical Safety Standards and Codes

(IT 52 Electricity and Electronics Class; Professor Mahalik)

Electrical safety is a major concern among the persons involved in construction, operation and maintenance, manufacturing, production and process design, electrical wiring, facility and risk management, workplace safety, and regulations and standards. All technicians are aware of the potential electrical hazards present in their work environment.

They know the meaning of safety precisely. They take special training in safety related topics. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Fact Sheet provides safety information on working with generators, power lines, extension cords, and electrical equipment. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) also provides links to information about electrical safety and electrocutions.

A small lamp light with a 6-watt bulb draws about 50 milli ampere (0.05 A) of current can become fatal. Below some effects of current (in milli amps) passing through a 100 pound body. It may not be fatal below 0.1 milli amps.

An electric shock occurs on a human body with any source of voltage that is high enough to cause enough current through the muscles. So, safety is important while we work with electrical and electronics systems.

In this lab activity you will write a report on Electrical Safety. You need to search the Internet to get information for your report. You can use Room IT 512 to use the Internet.

You have to search some authentic site in order to prepare the report. I have listed some of the important sites from where you can also get information. The report should include the following topics.

o Common causes of accidents (100 words)

o How you can protect yourself (50 words)

o Electrical emergency (50 words)

o Safety supplies (3-5 figures with citation/references)

o Intrinsic safety (100 words)

o National Electrical Safety codes and regulations (50 words)

o Groundfault circuit interrupter (GFCI) (100 words)

o What did I learn (50 words)

The Lab Report should meet the following formatting requirements.

o Write your name in the report.

o Use MS Word

o 12 Font, Times New Roman

o Single space, Single columns

o The report should be more than 1 page and no more than 3-page long.
