El Greco was known as a great painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. The nickname "El Greco" refers to his Greek origin and Spanish citizenship. With his own expressionistic, El Greco focuses on representing emotion for figures on artwork. The artwork "Penitent Saint Peter" was drawn by El Greco, Ca 1590-1596, oil on canvas. The painting depicts the Repentant Saint Peter, distraught at having denied that he knew Christ when questioned on the eve of crucifixion. By special methods and elements, artist focused on his facial expression, especially his sad eyes with tear drops, in order to show his emotions and soul. His posture is praying and looking on the heaven. The scene in the background at left shows Mary Magdalene running to tell Saint Peter about the news of Christ's resurrection which she had just received from angel. The artwork "Penitent Saint Peter" conveys the isolation, sadness, and hopelessness.
