Drawing on literature and class discussions, students must complete an essay exploring how the ideas in this unit of (working with the communities) study may be useful to their current or future practice. The essay could focus on: theories; skills; values; or the broader political context (or all of the above!). The essay will be discussed in class.

Units of study are:

History of community work and development in Australia, framing our work, empowerment, the neo-liberal state, relationship with the gov,, skills for practice, indigenous community, international community development, community leadership, and future direction and action to reclaim community development in Australia.

Assessment criteria:

1. Demonstrates engagement with current and emerging community work policy and practice issues.

2. Draws on ideas, readings and materials presented in the course and beyond.

3. Demonstrates a high level of critical self-reflection 4. Demonstrates a high level of analysis and is written in a coherent and scholarly manner, with appropriate referencing.
