According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is viewed by some as a traditional rite of passage and others as unnecessary, painful, and harmful procedure. FGM is a cultural tradition in many societies where gender inequality is ingrained (Ecyclopaedia Britannica). It is sometimes associated with religious traditions. This practice is still being used in many countries in the Middle East and Africa. Activists and many organizations have been asking for strong actions to stop this practice. Proponents of this practice use cultural traditions to justify it and accuse the Western countries of interference in traditional practices.
As the Ambassador of your country (CAMEROOM) to the African Governments and Politics Class, draft a one-page position paper that reflects the stand of your country on this issue. You paper should evaluate the pros and cons of the FGM and make a recommendation as to what the African Union needs to do regarding this practice.
