Does everyone know the difference between morals and ethics

1) Does everyone know the difference between morals and ethics? Morality deals with what is believed to be right and good, as opposed to ethics which deals with the study of how we make judgments in regard to right and wrong. Ethics offers a way of examining the moral life.

There are 7 principles to medical ethics:

Autonomy=self-governance or self-determination

Beneficence=to do good

Non-malficence=do no harm

Veracity=to tell the truth

Confidentiality=respect the privacy of patients

Justice=fairness

Role fidelity=to act within the assigned role of your profession and/or specialty

Class - Which one of these principles do you think informed consent was derived from? Why?

2) Hello class,

One of the subjects covered in this chapter is culture and the part it can play in healthcare. You really have to know the culture of the patient you are dealing with. Once when I was in residency I had a little boy who came in for a cough. When I went to listen to his lungs, I noticed that his back had bruises all over.

I immediately thought that he had been abused, although the interaction he had with his parents did not seem consistent with a child who had been abused.

When I presented the case to my attending, I told him of my suspicions. Luckily, my attending was of the same nationality as the family and was able to identify the cause of the bruising immediately.

The bruising was from a procedure known as "cupping". According to WebMD, "Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction. The cups can be made of a variety of materials, including:

Glass

Bamboo

Earthenware

Supporters of cupping therapy believe the suction of the cups mobilizesblood flow to promote the healing of a broad range of medical ailments."

My attending physician and the family were both of Asian descent. Cupping is practiced frequently, especially for people who have coughing as a symptom. Luckily the other physician knew this.

Otherwise, we could have had a bad situation on our hands. It definitely makes things easier for everyone if you are familiar with your patient population and their culture and beliefs.

Class - Has anyone had a similar experience?
