Does death means the end of conscious awareness

Problem: Socrates believes that death will either be "nothingness" or it will give him the opportunity to continue his philosophical mission by engaging in discussion with great minds. Is this a good argument? Does the fact that death means the end of conscious awareness, and means we will not feel any pain, imply that death is not bad for us? Could death be bad for us in some other way? Does Socrates' claim that a dreamless sleep is a great benefit square with the other principles he has espoused during his speech to the jury? When answering, keep in mind his claim about the importance of living an "examined life." Does it necessarily follow that if our soul migrates to the afterlife then we should see death as a benefit? Are there other possibilities for what happens after death besides the one that Socrates presents?
