Alex Homestar works for the Iowa Department of Very Large Numbers, an administrative agency. His supervisor at the Department is John Strongbad. Alex and John have differing political views. In particular, they differ in their opinion of Des Moines mayor King Oftown. John is a strong supporter of the mayor, but Alex is not. One day, Alex wears a shirt to work that says "King Oftown Should be Removed From Office and Pelted with Peas."

John is angered by Alex's political opinion, and demands that Alex remove the shirt immediately or be fired. Alex declines to remove the shirt. John fires Alex.
