In the Seminar, you will discuss the use of persuasion by medical professionals in the public health field. This is problematic in a number of ways described in your readings. Prior to the Seminar, give some thought to the use of persuasion by human service professionals and the impact this can have on a client and the helping relationship. It may be helpful to conduct additional research on this issue as well.
Please come to Seminar prepared to discuss the following:
What information did you learn from your own research about the use of persuasion with clients?
Do you think this practice is harmful to the helping relationship? If so, how? Is it unethical? If so, why?
How do you think this behavior impacts the following parties: The client? The helping relationship? The human service professional? Society as a whole?
