Problem: A female employee who has been out the last several days on sick time approaches you to inquire about FMLA. She begins by sharing with you that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She further shares that her mother died of breast cancer as well as her grandmother. Out of concern you ask her about treatment options the doctor is considering. You inquire about any sisters she may have and whether they have undergone testing as well. You ensure the employee that her condition will be covered under FMLA and that she may want to consider STD should she be out for an extended period of time.

You are aware that this employee's department will be undergoing reorganization shortly. This employees position maybe one that is being considered for elimination. This has not been announced as yet to anyone outside the most senior staff members.
