Reread the poem "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou. Consider how the meaning of that poem relates to Andy's escape. In the novella, Red gives a rather symbolic description of how he felt about the void that was left after Andy's escape. Compare the symbolism in the poem to that passage in the novella.
