Problem
This Tedx Talk was given by a 16 year old girl who is a junior in high school. She feels that nothing is being done to prevent our youth of today from taking on the path of substance abuse. She provided survey results from the Teen Health & National Drug Association of Canada that stated over 70% of students had abused alcohol, over 35% had used marijuana, and close to 7% used Adderall. (Adderall is a prescription drug to treat ADHD, but its street name is Speed.) As she progresses through her presentation, she is leaning towards the idea that peer pressure, teenage partying, and substance use/abuse will always result in poverty and increased unemployment rates. Do you agree with her? Do you agree that ALL substance abuse will end in such results? She also mentions about core values-values instilled by parents. Does youth always make decisions based on these values? Do you think culture plays a role if youth takes the path of destruction? Her solution is offering guidance and advice to today's youth through peer mentoring. Not a quick solution but a step towards a solution. Has this been done for today's youth as of yet?
