Do lithostratigraphic boundaries coincide with geologic time

Problem: If you ever look at a large cliff you will see some sort of layering, sometimes by colors or different sizes of grains in the rock. There are many reasons for the layering. When rock types change from one type to another there is a boundary between them. Do these lithostratigraphic boundaries always coincide with geologic timelines? Why or why not?
