Problem:
In this scenario, it is essential to maintain the clear distinction between counselling and coaching. While coaches provide advice and encouragement, counsellors help clients clarify and improve thinking patterns, understand themselves, and become empowered to accomplish their self-determined goals (Young, 2021). So when working with Colleen, I will remember that, through the assessments we are doing, my purpose is to provide her with information and a process that can help her clarify for herself what her educational path forward will include (Hays, 2024). Combining this approach with a warm, non-judgmental attitude will lend a positive, empowering tone to our sessions (Young, 2021). In the classroom, I see how below-average cognitive ability can affect self-esteem, which in turn affects assertiveness and self-determination (Kaya & Ogurlu, 2015). Strongly conveying warmth and client-centeredness will provide Colleen with a milieu that can foster improved self-concept and perceived locus of control, and her self-efficacy regarding future decision making. Alongside the standard cognitive and career tests, I will be sure to include strength-based assessments. Psychology has an understandable yet unfortunate proclivity to focus on pathology, which can be particularly damaging to children (Climie & Henley, 2016). Many children who struggle in academic or social arenas are competent in other areas, yet this is almost always overlooked (Climie & Henley, 2016). Choosing only deficit-focused assessments can negatively impact the student's perception of themself, and their parents. Need Assignment Help?
