This study examined the history of Palestinian universities from their emergence under Israeli occupation following the 1967 War through the outbreak of the second intifada in September 2000. Data for the study included interview and email exchanges with higher education and political leaders over a four-year period and reviews of primary and secondary written sources over the past three decades. During the period covered by the study, it was found that Palestinian universities served as powerful vehicles of social and political change in Palestinian communities by: (a) defining and articulating a Palestinian national identity, (b) resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and (c) building the nation of Palestine in the absence of a Palestinian state. This study also sought to identify factors that enabled Palestinian universities to serve as important vehicles of social and political change. Here it was found that the universities provided communities with physical and cultural space needed to understand and confront current challenges through a dynamic I describe as the power of the university.
