Older African-American women face a lower risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer as compared to white women, yet they ironically face increased breast cancer mortality. An increased incidence rate for early-onset disease has also been recognized. This study examined secondary data from the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) 2005 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) and oral narratives among 10 older African American Women (AAW) in order to conduct an valuation of the extent to which adequate health information is available, sought and used among older AAW, in particular, information about breast cancer. Four major themes were identified from the women's stories: women do talk, empowerment, connectedness and hope. Storytelling was found to be helpful in promoting health and facilitated an opportunity for the women to talk about breast cancer. Further research is recommended to position older African American women to use their empowerment skills to educate and encourage others to involve in health information sharing and influence behavior change into the natural occurring of discourse through traditional and non traditional settings.
