Disorders associated with copulation and ejaculation
Lack of libido refers to too long “reaction time” to complete absence of sexual desire for females in standing heat. The idiopathic lack of sexual desire is largely inherited. It is more often common in zebu breeds in tropical countries as compared to most breeds of the temperate regions. In general the bulls exhibit a large reaction time and although the apparent show of indifference to the presence of females in standing heat is seen in young bulls, the condition often improves with greater exposure and passage of time. In case of an inexperienced young bull the condition can improve when the bull is brought in contact with another bull having a good libido, or by repeated exposures to cows in heat which can enhance its sex drive. Administration of GnRH or HCG or combination of both will stimulate testosterone production within a few hours and enhance the bull’s sexual desire.
Sometimes a bull showing normal reaction time previously tends to become slow to respond. Such a situation normally occurs due to improper handling of the bull or pain or injury to the bull which results in a psychic loss of sexual desire. The symptomatic lack of libido is preventable by providing a congenial environment, better handling, sexual rest and appropriate treatment for healing painful injuries.
