Assignment task:
When the Spaniards conquered Mesoamerica in the 1500s, tribes were disbanded and the people were forced to let go of their ties to their language, spirituality and basically all aspects of their cultures. This process of forced assimilation was brutal and gruesome leaving so much trauma and disconnect behind. This was also happening to enslaved Africans at the time, and their history shares many similarities.
Before colonization, here in what we now call Sacramento, the Nisenan and Miwok people thrived and governed. They are known as the original inhabitants of this land. They are definitely still around today and are constantly fighting for their rights and the rights to sacred land. We will learn more about this later.
For this assignment: I want you to do some research on either the Miwok or Nisenan people and compose a one-page single spaced summary of your findings and why this is relevant to our society today.
