Discussion of memory in regards to survival

What are your thoughts on the content of this discussion below as it relates to ones memory. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

This is their discussion:

Without memory, we would not be able to "transfer moment-to-moment conscious experience to memory" (Whitman, 2011). For example, it would be impossible to recall events, people, and skills. The video stated "memory is the essential feature that enables us as humans to exist" (The Memory Phenomenon, n.d.). Without the ability to recall this vital information, one would simply float through life with no aspirations or expectations, and would furthermore have difficulty surviving in our world. There would be no chance to learn from past experiences that, as we know, is important for everyday survival in our world.

Explaining how episodic and implicit memories can foster learning that contributes to survival.

There are two types of long-term memories, episodic and implicit memories. Episodic memory can be associated with recall of memories as they related to time and place, whereas implicit memories occur without consciousness or intention (Whitman, 2011). As we utilize these forms of memory, we are able to make connections on a subconscious level in relation to time and place. Associating an event with time and place allows for better retention for recall later.

The area of the brain that this person thinks is most influential in the formation of memory for survival?

We know from animal research, clinical cases and human neurosurgery cases that the hippocampus and neighboring brain regions contained in the temporal lobe are essential to the formation of new memories" (Whitman, 2011). In addition to these areas being essential to formation of new memories, it is reasonable that damage to these areas would cause problems with short and long-term memory. If we are unable to form memories, and store the information long-term, developing survival strategies proves to be difficult.
