When we will be dealing with federal and state laws entitling employees to leave, benefits and income replacement during periods of illness/disability, family need and unemployment. Each student will be assigned a topic that s/he will present to the class. Each student will be responsible for:

• Producing and sharing a PowerPoint presentation: (maximum of 15 slides) summarizing key legal issues and the related take-away for employers

• Managing a discussion thread: posting at least one (1) substantive topic-related question for class discussion, monitoring and answer  to class comments

Sources: Students are expected to use - and cite - authoritative legal sources; these include the websites of relevant government agencies and articles written by attorneys who specialize in employment law. Students with access to the websites of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and Business and Legal Resources (BLR) may use those sources. A comprehensive list of potential sources is included in the Syllabus for this course. This is not a cut-and-paste assignment - students are expected to synthesize material from various sources and write in their own words. Any material taken verbatim from a source must be properly quoted and cited. See notes on  Plagiarism below.

Presentations should include information about which employers are subject to the law; which employees, former employees and/or dependents can benefit from the law; how claims are filed under the law; maximum benefits available under the law; criteria for determining whether benefits will be awarded; and best practices for employers in regard to the law.

Formatting: All sources used must be properly identified using the format outlined in the Publications Manual of the American Psychological

Association. Legal case citation should be as specified in The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation. Information about APA format is available at https://www.mercy.edu/libraries/APA_6thEdition.pdf ; information about Bluebook citation format is available at https://www.law.cornell.edu/citation/. Use of proper punctuation, spelling, capitalization and grammar will be taken seriously. Continuity of formatting and style is expected in the PowerPoint presentations.
