They all show similar autonomic responses, whereas negative emotions are unique to each other. This aligns with what we see on the outside as well. On one hand, positive facial expressions are hard to distinguish from each other because they "all share the Duchenne smile - in which the corners of the lips are raised and the muscles are contracted around the eyes, which raises the cheeks" (Fredrickson). On the other hand, negative emotions like anger, sadness, and fright have specific muscle movements that are easy to tell apart. It was interesting to learn this author's broaden-and-build theory, where he states that "positive emotions broaden an individual's momentary mind set, and by doing so help to build enduring personal resources" (Fredrickson). This broadening mind helps increase creativity, flexibility, one's social network, and optimism. I, myself, feel that I am less creative when I am feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
