Discussion: Thriving Family Structures

A thriving family structure should be composed of a parental/caregiver figure(s) and those that fall under their care, such as a child, or others who are in some form dependent on each other. Families can look different amongst cultures and circumstances, for example, some people determine that their family structure does not include anyone biologically related to them. Generally, a family system should act as a safety net and foundation for a person. However, in the traditional caregiver-child family, hierarchies and boundaries exist. The children, while developing (and most often well after full maturation has been achieved), depend directly on their parents or caregivers for emotional needs and basic needs. The parents are responsible for the care, safety, and fulfillment of the child. If we look at animals, the parents essentially nurse the children and teach them how to live and exist until they are fully able to exist on their own. I think this example can explain the similarities of the parent-child relationship in humans. There is a need for leadership present in the parent/caregiver role, since they are responsible for the well-being of the child; they must uphold their duties as mentioned above in order for the child to grow up appropriately nourished and securely attached to the parent/caregiver.
