Problem:
The mood disorder that I chose was postpartum depression. PPD is associated with sleep disturbance (insomnia or hypersomnia), appetite changes, psychomotor agitation or slowing, and persistent fatigue beyond what is expected in the normal postpartum period (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). Postpartum depression can have a huge effect on the body. It can cause extreme tiredness, and an individual to have very low energy. It can cause changes in sleep (not sleeping enough or sleeping too much) Postpartum depression can cause changing in sleep, appetite and headaches. Cognitive symptoms-such as impaired concentration and indecisiveness-can make managing infant care and daily tasks feel unmanageable (Stewart & Vigod, 2019 Postpartum can also affect the mind. It can cause extreme sadness, anxiety, or irritability. Concentration and decision making can be difficult, and some women have thoughts of harming themselves or the baby. Postpartum depression can also have an effect on the spirit of an individual. It can cause them to withdraw from society and lost their sense of identity or purpose. This isolation can deepen hopelessness and undermine the sense of being "worthy" of care or belonging. American Psychiatric Association. (2022). Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (5th ed., text rev.; DSM-5-TR). American Psychiatric Publishing. Because PPD impacts body, mind, and spirit, effective care is often holistic-combining evidence-based treatments (e.g., psychotherapy, medication when appropriate) with social support and interventions that reduce stigma and help mothers reconnect to supportive relationships and valued roles.
