Position Paper
This essay will begin our work with persuasive writing skills. Choose a subject that is generally considered controversial. Please avoid gigantic, overdone issues such as gun control, abortion, the drinking age, capital punishment, etc. and focus instead on smaller subjects that lend themselves to your writing requirement of 800 words. For example, a topic of suitable size might be whether or not middle school students should be required to wear uniforms.
Use only journal articles found in Dacus Library's databases and plan to do some reading on both sides of your issue. Researching with an open mind may even make you decide to change the position you had planned to take! Once you have settled upon your viewpoint and have selected three excellent sources, you will be ready to begin.
Please remember that your thesis, which should be the last sentence of your introductory paragraph, must both define the issue at hand and make clear the stance you will take. The body paragraphs will detail the major points of your argument. Each will be supported by solid evidence generated by your research. Remember that the best arguments do not ignore good points made by the opposition, but instead diminish their significance by offering a more compelling argument to the contrary.
