Discussion about the interpersonal psychotherapy

Respond to this post: Discussion: Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based, time-limited psychotherapy that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and addressing life stressors that contribute to psychiatric symptoms (Corey, 2024). As a future Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I plan to incorporate IPT into clinical practice by helping patients identify how relationship difficulties, role transitions, grief, and interpersonal conflicts influence their mental health. Rather than focusing primarily on distorted thoughts or maladaptive behaviors, IPT emphasizes strengthening communication skills, increasing social support, and resolving current interpersonal problems that contribute to depression and other mood disorders. This approach aligns well with the holistic, patient-centered model of care that PMHNPs strive to provide and supports the therapeutic relationship as an essential component of treatment (Cuijpers et al., 2021). Although IPT has demonstrated significant benefits for older adults experiencing depression and grief, it is also highly effective for adolescents, young adults, and individuals experiencing major depressive disorder, anxiety, or adjustment disorders. Adolescents and young adults often experience developmental challenges involving peer relationships, identity formation, family conflict, and life transitions that can negatively affect emotional well-being.
