Discussion about the disciplinary response from the dean

Assignment task: How would you proceed with the situation presented in the case example? What would you say to Kyle?

As the school social worker, you are called to the main office by the dean, who received a written notice from a teacher of an incident that occurred during the second period. The dean shares the notice with you from Mrs. Brown, which indicates that Kyle, a student in Mrs. Brown's second-period class, was disruptive and disregarded all of her directives to get him engaged and on track.

She expressed uncertainty about what sparked this behavior from Kyle, as he usually responds to redirection. She expressed that Kyle was not on task and kept yelling statements during the lesson. At some point, the teacher believed she heard negative comments from him about her ability to teach ("you don't even know what you're doing") and her commitment to the students ("you don't care about us anyway").

The behavior led to other students giggling, getting out of their seats, talking amongst themselves, and engaging with Kyle rather than participating in the lesson. Although not fully involved in the lesson, Kyle remained seated throughout the class. However, he did not produce any work. The teacher's notice requested a disciplinary response from the dean.
