Discussion about social interactionist-cognitive theories

Problem:

Social interactionist and cognitive theories are the two language theories that I prefer most for my teaching style. As defined by Mcleod in the website Simply Psychology, "social interactions is when learning happens between people first before it becomes internal. Children develop thinking skills through guided conversations and shared activities with more knowledgeable others." It is also described by Vgotsky that the theory emphasizes the importance of social context and meaningful communication in learning a language. (Mcleod, 2025). Cognitive theory which was influenced by Piaget shows its focus where learners actively construct knowledge by connecting new information to prior understanding. This theory requires strategies such as scaffolding, visuals, and teachers to model learning in order to support ELs to understand language concepts, patterns, and academic linguistics.

These two practices would drive my teaching practice as applied to English Learners as the supplement each other in their approach. For the social interactionist approach the experiences that an EL witnesses with real conversations that would cultivate usage where the cognitive approach ensure the students' ability to process what they are learning. With both of these theories a richer, more meaningful understanding of language is established. In my classroom, I can build this for all my students, especially ELLs.
