Operational Definition:

A meltdown is defined as behaviors such as crying and screaming, yelling and aggression (e.g.; throwing and kicking items) typically displayed during activity transitions, change in routine and when multiple-step directives are given.

Function of Behavior:

Based on Ethan's scenario, meltdown appeared to be triggered mostly by changes in his routine, transition between activities and when multiple-step directives are given. Therefore, the primary function of Ethan's meltdowns appeared to be escape/avoidance. Since Ethan is also displaying repetitive behaviors, they might function as automatic reinforcement for self-regulation when overwhelmed.

Antecedents:

  • Sudden changes in routine
  • Multiple step directives given during group work
  • Transitions between activities

Consequences:

  • Staff often provides extra time to transition to next activity.
  • Staff usually removed Ethan from group work and removed all demands to give him time to calm down.
  • Ethan is often provided with preferred activities to calm down during meltdown.

Replacement Behaviors:

Ethan will be provided with a visual routine and he will be taught to utilize his visual routine to transition smoothly to next activity.

Before Ethan's escalate to meltdown, Ethan will have on hand a break card to request break or verbalize to staff "I need a break" (Ethan will be given 5 minutes break using timer).

Ethan will be provided with different calming down strategies to prevent or deescalate meltdown (e.g., count to 10 and breath, short walk, put head down to rest, sensory bottle).

Ethan will invite a peer to play utilizing toys of his interest.

Treatment Goals for Ethan:

Ethan will utilize a visual break card to request break or verbalize to staff "I need a break" when feeling overwhelmed.

Ethan will be able to engage in classroom activities with minimal prompts by transitioning smoothly between activities using his visual routine.

Ethan will independently practice any calming strategies to self-regulate before escalating to meltdown.

Ethan will utilize items from his sensory box (e.g., wobble cushion, weighted pad, sensory bottle) to self-regulate and decrease repetitive behaviors (e.g., flapping, rocking, humming) during classroom activity engagement.

With staff support, Ethan will engage in age-appropriate social interaction by sharing with peer items of interest and engaging in peer play."
