Discussion about comprehensive psychiatric assessment

Problem:

This comprehensive psychiatric assessment was conducted for a 20-year-old male who attends state college. The patient reports that his parents called for an appointment with the psychiatrist, and he does not know why. The patient's parents report he is having difficulty in school. Presenting symptoms include delusions of grandeur, tangential thought process and paranoia. The presenting symptoms indicate a diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that affects less than 1% of the United States population (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2020). Symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, trouble concentrating, lack of motivation and disorganized speech (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2020). Schizophrenia affects men and women equally, but tends to have earlier onset in males (APA, 2020). Schizophrenia is generally diagnosed in late adolescence through early 30s. Men typically get diagnosed between their late teens and early 20s, with a peak at 21-25 years ofage. Women are typically diagnosed later between the ages of 25-30 or again after menopause (Estakhri, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the psychiatric evaluation of this individual in furtherance of knowledge regarding the signs and symptoms of Schizophrenia and appropriate physical and laboratory exams affiliated with such a diagnosis.
