Discussion about cognitive psychology

Problem: Respond to Statement below

Statement:

The study of the "mind" has been a challenge for psychologists because it is hard to define. Early theorists like Atkinson, Shiffrin, and Tulving helped shape cognitive psychology by creating models of memory and understanding how we process information. Their ideas still influence research today, especially studies on how we remember and store information (Goldstein & Hale, 2026).

Today, the field seems to balance empirical evidence with theoretical models more effectively than in the past. Researchers rely on measurable data from neuroscience and behavioral experiments, but they still use theories to make sense of those findings. Neither approach stands alone; instead, they inform each other.

The decline in studying the mind emerged from strict behaviorist views, especially those promoted by Watson and Skinner, who argued that internal mental processes were unobservable and therefore unscientific. The resurgence of cognitive psychology was sparked by new technologies, dissatisfaction with behaviorism, and the cognitive revolution that re-embraced the study of mental processes (Goldstein & Hale, 2026).
