Discussion about autism-specific teacher training

Problem: Thank you! Please reply to this discussion post in 250 words and you can respond to these prompted questions. Do you agree with your colleague's choice of research design for investigating the proposed research question? Why or why not? Can you suggest another approach or provide additional background information on the topic that could be useful in your colleague's final proposal? Can you see any ethical concerns that were not mentioned by your colleagues? Need Assignment Help?

Good morning,

My proposed research examines the relationship between autism-specific teacher training and the quality of Individualized Education Program (IEP) implementation in elementary school classrooms. The research question guiding this study is: Does autism-specific teacher training influence the quality of IEP implementation and student engagement outcomes for elementary students with autism? As the number of students diagnosed with autism continues to rise, schools are increasingly responsible for providing appropriate supports that help students succeed academically and socially. Although IEPs are designed to guide these supports, the effectiveness of an IEP often depends on how well teachers are prepared to implement the strategies written in the plan.

Previous research suggests that many teachers feel underprepared to support students with autism, particularly when they have limited training in evidence-based practices (Brock et al., 2014). Studies examining the quality of IEPs have also found variation in how clearly goals are written and how effectively they are implemented in classroom settings (Ruble et al., 2010). Because teachers play a central role in translating IEP goals into daily instruction, examining the relationship between training and implementation may provide important insight into improving educational outcomes for students with autism.

To investigate this question, this study will use a quantitative, non-experimental correlational research design. A correlational design is appropriate because teacher training levels cannot be ethically manipulated. Instead, the study will examine naturally occurring differences in teacher preparation and analyze whether those differences are associated with variations in IEP implementation quality and student engagement. Quantitative correlational research is commonly used to examine relationships between educational variables when experimental manipulation is not possible (Morling, 2015).

Several ethical considerations must also be addressed. Participation will be voluntary, and teachers will provide informed consent before participating. Confidentiality will be maintained by removing identifying information from all collected data. Additionally, any student-related educational information, such as IEP documentation, will be de-identified to protect student privacy. The study would also require approval from an Institutional Review Board to ensure compliance with ethical standards.
