Problem:
As a student, how will you respond to this classmate below include in-text citation, references and ask questions?
Attraction in the counseling relationship is something that must be addressed carefully because of the inherent power imbalance, the risk of harm, as well as clear ethical violations. If a client and I experienced mutual attraction, I would not continue the counseling relationship. I do not see a way to maintain a productive and ethical therapeutic relationship and think that a referral be the only appropriate action. Avoiding a referral in this case may be unethical in of itself as it could be seen as a continuation of an already unethical relationship with a client. The ACA Code of Ethics clearly prohibits romantic or sexual relationships with current clients, regardless of circumstances (ACA, 2014, A.5.a). In this situation, I would seek supervision and arrange a referral.
If I experienced attraction towards a client but the client has not expressed similar feelings, I would not disclose those feelings. Instead, I would process them in supervision and assess whether they interfere with my objectivity or clinical effectiveness. The ACA emphasizes counselor responsibility to manage personal reactions and avoid harm to the client (ACA, 2014, A.5.b). Personally, as someone who values my marriage, I would do some self-reflection to determine what the therapeutic relationship was bringing up for me that my marriage may be lacking. Then without disclosing confidential information with my husband I would work to resolve any issues we may be facing as a couple, seeking couples therapy if necessary.
When a client expresses attraction, but I do not share those feelings, I would respond with empathy while maintaining clear professional boundaries. Attraction can sometimes reflect unmet needs and have little to do with me specifically. This could be explored therapeutically without encouraging a boundary violation. When referral is not possible, ongoing supervision, documentation and intentional boundary management are essential to protect the client's welfare. Need Assignment Help?
