Discusses the situational approach to leadership the focal

Discusses the situational approach to leadership. The focal point of this chapter is that different situations require different kinds of leadership. More specifically, a leader’s style needs to adapt to the level of competence and commitment of his followers. It is applicable in almost any type of organization, at any level, for all types of goals.

1. What is the difference between directive and supportive behaviors? Give examples of a situation when one would be preferred over the other.

2. Leadership styles are explained as “a behavior pattern of a person who attempts to influence others.” How does leadership style (directive vs. supportive behaviors) relate to the behavioral approach (task behaviors vs. relationship behaviors)?

3. Figure 5.1 (pg 95) illustrates a guide for situational leadership. Using this chart, explain the general idea of how this approach works and give examples of how a leadership style would need to be changed or adapted based on a follower’s movement along the developmental continuum.
