The First Amendment protects a number of rights for citizens, including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, along with the right of assembly and the right to petition the government (pp. 69-81 in the book).
There are limited times when the federal government can set reasonable limits on the exercise of these rights to ensure safety, but the government must balance these limits with the right of citizens to maximum freedom.
Many Americans have exercised their right to protest and express their political opinions in recent weeks and months, particularly as President Trump has issued controversial executive orders.
