Discuss your plan of action in response to the case

Problem

Scenario: You are a social worker employed in a neighborhood mental health clinic. Your client is a 35-year-old white male, Jack, who is separated from his wife and two children, aged 10 and 8. He has come to the clinic because he has trouble holding any job for more than a few weeks. He was referred to the clinic by a friend whose cousin once worked

In his last job, Jack worked as a car dealership salesperson but lost his job last month for being late to work and sometimes not showing up at all. He was also told that several of his colleagues were afraid for their safety when working with him. He is depressed and bitter about his marriage and his limited visiting rights with his children. He dresses neatly and gives the impression of a gentle, soft-spoken man, though he describes sudden outbursts of temper. He states that he wants help in being able to get and keep a job.

As you talk to him on his first visit, it becomes clear that he has strong racist opinions about people who are Black and people who are Asian. He uses racial slurs and relates several stories intended to demonstrate the moral inferiority of people from these groups.
