The purpose of satire is moral reform - discuss with reference to at least one of the following observations: satire is made more difficult when real life already seems like a self-caricature (The New Yorker's Andy Borowitz speaking about Trump on CNN); moral reform requires consensus on morality and this is well-nigh impossible in a globalised media landscape comprised of drastically different cultures (Will Self on BBC Radio 4 Point of View);
satire reveals immorality and irrationality on the part of public figures, but in order to be effective it must assume rationality and morality on the part of writers and readers, and when these qualities can no longer be assumed, satire seems to be rendered ineffective.
