3. Discuss why it is important for school counselor to use ASCA standards
Hi, so I'm going to talk about what I learned from the ASCA model, my reactions to the duties, and what surprised me. So honestly, before this, I thought school counseling was mostly just about helping students when something goes wrong, schedule changes, that type stuff. But after learning about the ASCA national model, I realized its way more intentional than what I thought. It's actually a full program that is designed to support the students academically, socially, and emotionally. What stood out to me was that counselors are not just reacting to a problem or the student's problems.
They're helping plan. They're helping the students plan. They're using data, and they're making decisions based off what the students actually need. another um big takeaway for me was um the focus on making sure everything is done equally um the ethical standards from the asca make it clear that counselors are responsible for advocating for all students and helping remove any barriers that may hold them back um that part really shifted my mindset because it shows how counseling is not just supportive um or supportive role it is also about creating change um so when i looked at the section on appropriate versus inappropriate duties um i it was interesting because at my school um some of those inappropriate roles were done in the past previously i can't speak for now um too much but i know that some of the duties are not what the school counselors are supposed to do so the appropriate duties made sense like working directly with students leading groups using data collaborating with teachers and people within the school um but then when i saw the inappropriate duties um like i said i i've seen it done before testing coordinator um giving tests us dealing with schedules of course and like handling discipline though those are all things that I've seen actually happen at a school but because the ASCA model makes it clear that when counselors are pulled into those roles it actually takes away from the students and I can agree with that what surprised me was how deep the ethical standards responsible responsibilities go it's It's not just about confidentiality, it's about also respecting the students' identity, their culture, and working against any biases. I was also surprised on how much focus there was on accountability. So counselors are expected to actually measure their impact and show results, and research supports this. At the end of the day, the ASCA standards matter because they keep our jobs counseling focused, ethical, and student-centered.
And most importantly, they make sure that every student has the support that they need.
