In the "Introduction" to Religion and Its Monsters, Timothy Beal states that monsters "are paradoxical personifications of otherness within sameness" (Beal, 4).
1. In your own words (and as best as you are able), explain what Beal means by this statement.
2. In Chapter 8, Beal devotes a good deal of space to articulating how (especially Western) travellers to places such as India have responded to religious visual culture/ art over the past few centuries. Why does Beal do this? That is, discuss what points (both negative and positive) Beal is trying to make?
