EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Part 2 School Improvement Team/Plan, Identification of Professional Development Needs, and Collaborative Planning

• Plan to attend a School Improvement Team (SIT) or center planning meeting to discuss their school-wide learning goals (FEAP b.5.d/InTASC 9d.p, 10b.p, 10c.p, 10d.p, 10m.k, 10n.k, 10q.d) and the data on which they based these decisions (FEAP b.5.c/InTASC 9c.p).

If you are unable to attend a SIT or center planning meeting, you can read the minutes from past meetings and/or the school's Improvement Plan to locate the school-wide goals (FEAP b.5.a/InTASC 9a.p).

Option: If the educational setting that you selected does not have a SIT or center planning meetings, then interview the principal or director and/or review the center's or Broward County District's learning goals.

After interviewing the administrator and/or or reading the school's or center's goals, choose one of the school-wide goals on which to focus for your own professional development area (FEAP b.5.a/InTASC 9a.p). Explain why you chose this goal.

1. Briefly reflect on the SIT meeting/minutes (or information provided by the administrator) and the center/school challenges and school-wide goals (FEAP b.5.d/InTASC 9d.p, 10b.p, 10c.p, 10d.p, 10m.k, 10n.k, 10q.d). Include a discussion of the background data on which the committee and colleagues or the administrator based goal decisions (e.g., the school's test scores that you analyzed in Part 1) (FEAP b.5.c/InTASC 9c.p).

1. Discuss ways to collaborate with the students' families to improve student outcomes. Show evidence of communication and collaboration with colleagues and/or families to develop this section. Discuss ways to engage the students' families to improve student outcomes. ?

Conclude this portion of the narrative with a brief explanation of why you will be focusing future professional development opportunities on the chosen school-wide goal (FEAP b.5.a/InTASC 9a.p).

Part 3 Reviewing Codes of Ethics and Creating Your Professional Development Plan

• Read your Florida's Department of Education Code of Ethics and the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct (FEAP b.5.h). List those elements that are directly related to professional development (and cite your sources).

1. For Florida, refer to https://www.fldoe.org/edstandards/code_of_ethics.asp. ?
2. For NAEYC, locate the code of ethical behavior in the position statements section ?www.naeyc.org

• Next, read the articles in the list below or other articles related to professional development in early childhood education (FEAP b.5.b/InTASC 9c.p, 9h.k, 9k.k, 9l.d). You can use the online periodical databases available through the NSU library (NSU b.5.g). Read and provide a brief (one-two paragraph) summary of each article. Discuss the importance of and need for professional development. State how it contributes to enhancing your ability to support children's learning and appropriate assessment.
