There are theorists who feel culture in countries outside the United States still hold many individuals back. As the prompt mentions, in India it has been difficult to move out of a lower-class structure if you are born into a poor family. Education was held back from both men and women in a lower caste structure. In rural areas of India, the upper caste lives in segregated communities from the lower caste. However, more recently, urbanization has allowed for the spread of education and the caste system has somewhat declined with its influence. Different castes live side-by-side and marriages outside one's caste is far more common. In the United States we do not have a caste system; however, many theorists feel there is an unspoken caste system. Caste essentially is seen as individuals who are different and unequal and are fated to remain so. Race and caste are seen as different from one another with both being seen in societies throughout the world. Caste is seen as a social group one is born into, and race is seen as ethnic or biologically inherited. In the United States, theorists speak about distinctions among individuals living in varying communities. These distinctions are seen through education, wealth, race, religion, and gender.
